    About the Euronext Stock Exchange


    The Euronext is an Amsterdam based stock exchange that has subsidiaries in several other European countries, such as Belgium, France, Netherlands and United Kingdom. It provides information on clearings and also deals in equities and derivatives. It is the 5th largest exchange worldwide, having a market capitalization of US $2.9 trillion by the end of the year 2010, and listings of over 1176 issues. The Euronext has a history of mergers and acquisitions. In 2002 it acquired the London International Financial Futures and Options Exchange to form Euronext. Liffe, at which time electronic trading through the Liffe Connect platform was introduced. Liffe gives access to a large variety of option and future products on short term interests bonds, stocks, commodities and equities.




    The platform is successful enough that it has begun to sell to other exchanges, like the Tokyo International Financial Futures Exchange. But the Euronext has had dealings with other exchanges as well; in April of 2007, it merged with the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) to form the NYSE Euronext, considered to be the first truly global stock exchange. The Deutsche Borse further attempted to merge with the Euronext the following year in November, but the deal was halted due to apparent differences in valuation between parties.

    The hours of the Euronext differ based on location and platform, but generally you can trade between the hours of 9:00-17:30 CET. In addition, the Liffe Connect platform allows for trading to occur over a 21 hour time span across all countries.
