    About the Milan Stock Exchange

Beginning in January of 1808 by decrees of viceroy of the Kingdom of Italy, Eugene de Beauharnais, the The Borsa di commercio di Milano, or Milan Stock Exchange, was formed. Headquartered in Milan, the Milan Stock Exchange was managed publicly by Italy until 1997, when it was sold to a consortium of banks under a joint-stock holding company. A decade later, the exchange was acquired by the expanding London Stock Exchange in an all-share-takeover. Its world capitalization in 2005 was US $890 billion.

The Milan exchange today manages several avenues of securities, including Italy’s derivatives, fixed income markets, nonconvertible bonds and government securities. It employs over 130 brokers worldwide, with the majority operating from Italy itself. Trades are executed primarily in real time using the Milan Stock Exchange’s electronic trade platform. The Milan Stock Exchange also provides organizational, promotional and commercial activities dedicated to bettering the financial community.

The Milan market is divided into five distinct parts: the Nuovo Mercato, which focuses on advancing and innovative companies, the Mercato Ristretto which manages basic securities that aren’t permitted into official exchanges for one reason or another, the Premi, which is a market for premium contracts on stock exchange products, and the MTA and STAR, both of which trade traditional shares, convertible bonds and warrants, with the STAR market emphasizing companies that are capitalized from 40-100 million euros that are already listed.
