Tokyo Stock Exchange
About the Tokyo Stock Exchange
Located in Tokyo, Japan, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, commonly called “Tosho” by Japanese natives is the 3rd largest stock exchange in the world, the largest stock exchange in Asia. The TSE had a market capitalization estimated at around US $3.8 trillion as of December 2010. Over 2,292 companies are listed with the TSE.
The Tokyo Exchange itself was officially founded in 1878 as one of many Japanese stock exchanges. In 1943, the exchange was combined with 10 other exchanges in the major Japanese cities. This exchange persisted until the bombing of Nagasaki in World War II. The Tokyo Stock Exchange reopened only 6 years later in its current location, headquartered at 2-1 Nihonbashi-kabutocho, Chuo, Tokyo. In 1990, the exchange accounted for over 60% of the world’s stock market capitalization, an unprecedented amount. Floor trading was the main effort of the TSE for the majority of its lifetime, but starting on April 30, 1999, the TSE moved focus to electronic trading, making it the required format for transactions. The London Stock Exchange (LSE) began jointly developing traded products and sharing technology in the late 2000s. Since 2007, the TSE has seemed poised to take a major stake in the Singapore Exchange (SGX). In 2007 the Tokyo Stock Exchange acquired a 5% stake of the SGX and appears to be planning greater participation.
Management of the securities exchange is handled by nine directors, eight executive officers and four auditors. Its current CEO is Atsushi Saito, and its chairman is Taizo Nishimuro.
