About the Toronto Exchange
The Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) is the 8th largest stock exchange in the world, the third largest in North America, and the absolute largest in Canada itself. In December of 2010 it had a market capitalization value of US $2.17 trillion.
Located in Toronto, Canada, the TSX was founded on October 25, 1861, with a formal incorporation carried out in 1878 by the Legislative Assembly of Ontario. Since its formal inception into the world of securities, it has set an uphill trend in growth of both size and shares, barring a brief quarter in 1914 when fear of World War I halted its momentum. In 1934, the Toronto Exchange merged with its main competitor, the Standard Stock and Mining Exchange, leading to its current day incarnation.
The Toronto Exchange lists a variety of securities. In addition to conventional securities, it also lists ETFs, split share corporations, income trusts and investment funds. Of all the stock exchanges in the world, the Toronto Stock exchange carries the most mining, oil and gas companies in its listings. Since 1977, the Toronto exchange has managed automated electronic trades by means of CATS (Computer Assisted Trading System). In 2011, the Toronto exchange agreed to a merger with the London Stock Exchange (LSE) which is expected to create an entity with a staggering market capitalization of over US $5.9 trillion, making it the second largest exchange in the world behind the New York City Stock Exchange (NYSE).
